When Hillary cheated her way to the Democratic nomination last year, progressives were presented with four unacceptable choices. They could support Hillary, they could support Trump, they could support Jill Stein, or they could stay home.
Most supported Hillary, although a substantial number supported Trump. In fact, those whom supported Trump put Trump into the White House.
Trump’s margin of victory was Blue Collar Democrats in the Rust Belt. Democrats who supported Obama in 2008 and 2012. And who supported Bernie Sanders in the 2016 primaries.
They responded to Trump’s opposition to NAFTA, to the TPP, to Normalized Trade Relations with China. They were all too familiar with the fact that 60,000 US factories have been shuttered since 2000, that millions of well paying jobs were outsourced by US corporations. That American companies were forcing American workers to compete for wages against workers in China, Mexico, and Vietnam.
